Understanding PETG and TPU
PETG (Polyethylene Terephthalate Glycol) is a strong, slightly flexible filament resistant to impact and heat. It’s great for structural parts like RC components. TPU (Thermoplastic Polyurethane) is a flexible, rubber-like filament perfect for shock-absorbing parts such as tires or gaskets.
Both materials require careful bed preparation because they don’t always stick easily to standard surfaces.
Common Challenges
- Poor adhesion: Prints might lift or warp during printing.
- Stringing and blobs: More common with TPU due to its flexibility.

Bed Adhesion Tips for PETG
1. Use a Suitable Bed Surface
PETG sticks well to glass, PEI sheets, or BuildTak-type surfaces. Glass beds with a light coating of glue stick or hairspray can improve adhesion.
2. Set the Right Bed Temperature
A heated bed around 70-80°C helps PETG stay stuck during printing. Too hot and you risk oozing; too cold and the print might lift.
3. Apply Adhesion Aids
Use a thin layer of PVA glue stick or a light spray of hairspray on the bed. These create a tacky surface that PETG loves.
4. Adjust First Layer Settings
- Lower your print speed for the first layer (20-30 mm/s).
- Increase first layer thickness slightly (0.2-0.3 mm).
- Set the first layer height a bit closer to the bed for better “squish.”
Bed Adhesion Tips for TPU
1. Use a Flexible Surface
TPU likes flexible surfaces like PEI sheets or blue painter’s tape. These provide some grip without being too aggressive.
2. Control Bed Temperature
Set the bed temperature between 40-60°C. This reduces warping while preventing the TPU from sticking too aggressively.
3. Keep the Bed Clean
Dust and oils prevent TPU from sticking properly. Clean the bed with isopropyl alcohol before each print.
4. Use a Brim or Raft
Adding a brim or raft can increase surface area and improve adhesion, especially for small or intricate parts.
General Tips for Both Materials
- Level your bed carefully: Even small gaps can cause adhesion issues.
- Calibrate your Z-offset: The nozzle should be close enough to the bed for the filament to stick but not so close it clogs.
- Avoid drafts: Printing in a draft-free environment helps maintain temperature consistency.
